Junk Removal in Kelowna: What It Costs and What to Expect
Junk removal in Kelowna isn't complicated, but pricing is confusing if you've never booked it before. Quotes vary a lot between companies, the way jobs are priced isn't always obvious, and there are some things crews won't haul no matter who you call. This guide covers what things actually cost, what goes where, and what to expect if you book with Cool Runnings.
What Counts as Junk?
More than most people expect. The classic use cases are renovation cleanouts (drywall, lumber scraps, old flooring, fixtures), household cleanouts (furniture, appliances, mattresses, boxes of accumulated stuff), and yard waste (branches, old fencing, dirt, sod).
Beyond those, Cool Runnings garbage runs also handle the awkward large items that most people don't know how to deal with: hot tubs (yes, we do these, they're a whole project), old deck materials, sheds being torn down, old play structures, exercise equipment that's too heavy to move alone.
Appliances are fine: fridges, stoves, washers, dryers, dishwashers. Old furniture in any condition. Mattresses and box springs. Garage and storage unit cleanouts where years of accumulated items need to go in one trip.
If you're not sure whether something qualifies, call and ask. The answer is usually yes, with a few exceptions covered below. Garbage runs in Kelowna cover most of the valley, Kelowna, West Kelowna, Lake Country, Vernon, and surrounding communities.
How Junk Removal Pricing Works in Kelowna
Most junk removal companies price by volume, how much of the truck your load fills. This is the most transparent approach and it's how Cool Runnings prices jobs too.
Typical pricing in the Kelowna market runs roughly:
Minimum pickup fee (a small load, a single item, or minimum call-out): typically $80 to $150.
Quarter to half a truck: typically $150 to $300, depending on material weight and access.
Full truck or large household cleanout: typically $300 to $500, occasionally more for very large volumes or heavy materials (concrete, dirt).
Dump fees are included in the quoted price, no surprise charges at the end. What you're quoted before the job is what you pay.
A few factors push prices up: difficult access (carrying items down stairs, through tight spaces, or long distances to the truck), heavy materials (concrete blocks, large amounts of soil), and hazardous material surcharges where applicable. Jobs that require equipment like a junk saw to disassemble a hot tub will be quoted accordingly.
Pricing for garbage runs and junk removal across the Okanagan is based on actual volume. We'll give you an honest estimate before we start, no hidden fees.
The best way to get an accurate quote is to send photos or a video walkthrough. Describing a "basement cleanout" can mean very different things, showing us the actual volume gets you a number you can plan around.

What Can't Be Hauled (and Where It Goes Instead)
There's a short list of items that no junk removal company in Kelowna can legally haul to the landfill, and it's worth knowing before you book.
Items that require special disposal:
Paint cans (even dried paint), propane tanks and other pressurized containers, tires, batteries (car and household), fluorescent light tubes, chemicals (herbicides, pesticides, cleaners), motor oil, and anything containing asbestos.
These all go to the Kelowna Landfill's special waste drop-off on Glenmore Road. The drop-off accepts most of these items and the City of Kelowna's website has current operating hours and accepted materials. For small quantities of household hazardous waste, the Recycling Council of BC's hotline (1-800-667-4321) can direct you to the nearest disposal option.
Medical waste and sharps have their own disposal process through pharmacies and health facilities, not through junk removal.
If you have a mix of regular junk and a few hazmat items, we'll take the regular load and let you know what you'll need to drop off yourself. It's a common situation and not a problem.
Paint cans, propane tanks, batteries, and tires cannot go in a regular dump run. Keep these separate before your appointment and plan to drop them at the Kelowna Landfill's special waste facility on Glenmore Road.
Kelowna Landfill vs. Hiring a Junk Removal Crew
Self-hauling to the Kelowna Landfill on Glenmore Road is an option for homeowners with a suitable vehicle and a manageable volume of material. The landfill accepts most household waste and construction debris, and tipping fees are based on weight. For a small load in a truck or trailer, it can be a cost-effective choice.
Where it breaks down: you need a truck or trailer, you need to load it yourself, and most cleanouts take more than one trip. For anything beyond a single small load, your time adds up fast. Time spent renting a trailer, loading, driving to Glenmore Road, unloading, and making a second trip is usually worth more than the cost difference between self-hauling and hiring a crew.
There's also the labour question. A lot of the items in a typical cleanout are heavy, awkward, or both. Moving a fridge down stairs alone is a bad idea. A hot tub is a proper project. When you factor in the physical effort, equipment you might not have, and the real time involved, hiring a Kelowna junk removal crew makes sense for most cleanouts beyond a single carload.
What to Expect on the Day
The process is simple. You get a quote (over the phone or by photo), you pick a day that works, and we show up on time.
For a standard household cleanout, plan for one to three hours. Smaller jobs, a garage clear-out or a few large items, are often done in under an hour. Hot tub removal or large deck demolition projects take longer and will be quoted with a realistic time estimate.
Ramoy and the team do the lifting. Your job is to point at what's going and what's staying. We work through the space systematically and leave it clean, no debris left behind, no damage to walls or floors from careless hauling.
Payment is typically due on completion, by e-transfer, cash, or card. Confirm the payment method when you book if that matters to your situation.
For same-day or next-day requests, we do our best to accommodate, availability depends on the schedule. Call (250) 307-9220 directly for urgent requests. Booking a few days ahead is always safer if you have a specific date in mind.

Take five minutes before the crew arrives to walk through and make sure you know exactly what's going. Last-minute "wait, not that" decisions slow things down. A clear plan makes for a faster, smoother job.
How to Prepare for a Junk Removal Appointment
A little preparation before the crew shows up makes the job faster and ensures you don't accidentally lose anything you wanted to keep.
