How to Calculate Mulch Coverage
The formula for calculating mulch or rock is straightforward:
- Measure your bed โ length (ft) x width (ft) = square footage.
- Choose your depth โ convert inches to feet by dividing by 12.
- Calculate cubic feet โ square footage x depth in feet.
- Convert to cubic yards โ divide cubic feet by 27 (there are 27 cubic feet in a cubic yard).
For example: a 12 ft x 4 ft bed at 3 inches deep = 48 sq ft x 0.25 ft = 12 cubic feet = 0.44 cubic yards. Our calculator handles the math for you and rounds up so you do not run short.
Mulch Depth Guide
- 2-3 inches โ ideal for flower beds, perennial gardens, and around shrubs. Suppresses weeds while allowing water through.
- 3-4 inches โ best for pathways, play areas, and high-traffic zones. Provides better weed control and longer-lasting coverage.
- 1-2 inches โ sufficient for decorative stone and rock around established plants or as a top-dress.
Avoid piling mulch deeper than 4 inches, as it can suffocate plant roots and trap too much moisture. Keep mulch 2-3 inches away from tree trunks and plant stems.
Rock vs Mulch in the Okanagan
Both rock and mulch work well in the Okanagan's semi-arid climate, but they serve different purposes:
- Mulch โ breaks down over 1-2 years, adding nutrients to the soil. Great for flower beds and gardens. Needs replenishing annually. Retains moisture well in our dry summers.
- Rock โ permanent, low-maintenance, and fire-resistant (important in the Okanagan). Best for xeriscaping, drainage areas, and decorative features. Can reflect heat, so avoid around heat-sensitive plants.
- Best of both โ many Okanagan homeowners use mulch in garden beds and rock in pathways, borders, and dry creek features.
